    Another stimulus question....

We are getting our stimulus check deposited into our account tomorrow. Our lawyer said that he could exempt it for us and we're not filing until the end of this month or beginning of June. I've been reading on here that a lot of people are getting their stimulus checks taken away from them. Can this still happen even though my lawyer said he'd be able to exempt it? We're filing federal exempt.

    Thanks.

I would suggest spending it and keeping receipts. I haven't filed yet either, and will probably do it in June or July. Our stimulus will be here tomorrow as well, and we will spend it.

You can exempt it as long as federal exemptions allow it? I filed in California and exempted almost 8K of my tax return.

Good to know...at this point we have to use it. My husband and I both just found work this week after being laid off for almost 3 months. It's already almost spent (mentally) on lawyer fees, insurance, school clothes, (year round school here) blah, blah, blah...

No, but he's sprouted about 2+ inches since the beginning of the school year and pants are looking like capris...holes in the knees, shorts no longer fit, things like that

I can only assume the timing of filing and receiving your stimulus might be a factor. If you file after you already received your stimulus sounds like the trustee wouldn't be able to touch, after all you can always say you used it to pay your lawyer???!!! Its odd the Trustee never goes after the lawyer for the money, don't you think!!!??? But when you pay an outsider or insider certain amounts of money they go after them!

We are also spending ours before we file. Our paralegal thinks if we keep receipts we will be fine. Nothing luxury wise on my list of to do with the check. Having a painter paint a couple bad spots on the house, having a new window put in my car (broke last winter in an ice storm), new clothes for the kids (mine outgrew almost everything-2 boys), fixing door locks on DH truck, having an electrician come and fix a few things needing done, and I might even by myself a few flowers for the yard, oh and I think I'll pay off our huge winter heating bill. That should be about cover it. Hopefully a trustee won't get too mad about these things.
