Dumb Question I know but a serious one....

I just hung up the phone with my Mother who said her and Dad are going on a cruise later this summer. That in itself is no big deal(it is but not for someone who is broke) but she then went on to say that Dad wants to take my husband, daughter, 2nd oldest son and myself. I laughed at the idea BUT she was not joking. I told her there was no way we could afford it and with the BK it was impossible. She clarified that THEY were paying! This caught me off guard thats for sure.
My Grandfather passed away 15 months ago and the last of his life insurance policies paid. I dont have any idea how much but I guess it was quite a bit.
So they are feeling very generous. She thinks it would be so good for us to go. She mentioned trips from when I was a child(we traveled tons)...and got all mushy on me about how great it would be and how much my Dad would enjoy doing something like this with us.(my Dad had a massive heart attack this past December and its a miracle he is alive). I have never asked my parents for money or taken any loans ever from them. They have offered but I never wanted the family loan relations. She kept insisting that this is THEIR gift and we would be doing them a favor by accepting it. Food is all included so we wont even need money for that.



I know this is probably going to be a dumb question and I have not told her yes, of course I havent told her no yet either But are there any laws about luxury vacations paid for by someone else? Its not a loan. We need no money.

I would just put a bug in your attorney's ear, but IMHO, you should be fine. It isn't like they are giving you money or buying you tangible property (ie car, ect).

You should be fine. Non harm no foul. All inclusive vacation. All you have to pay for are souviners. Go on the trip and have a blast. It will be a much needed vacation.

It's not a dumb question - I know exactly how you feel. We filed in Feb. had our 341 in March and in April my Dh and I and our 4 kids went on a cruise with my mom in law. She took the whole family - paid for it all. My concern was would we be needed for anything regarding the BK while we were gone b/c it would look bad - But the timing worked out. As long as you are not spending the money and the dates will not possibly conflict with the 341 mtg. (not sure what your timeline is) I'd go for it! We just let our attny know way in advance what dates we'd be gone and out of touch. Go and enjoy - I knew it would be the last trip we'll be taking for a loong time as we dig oursleves out of this mess and it meant the world to our whole family!

I think this is a great question and thinking about it and reading some of the answers has helped clarify things for me. I also think this shows that how diligent and thorough and careful you are.

Now my question is, where the heck are my friends and family? ... And from reading your post, you told the folks--am I right? ... They know you're filing for bk, and this is the way they respond? ... What's wrong with those folks? ... Where's the guilt, the shame, the rejection? ...

What are they doing? ... Trying to help you and nurture you in a time of need at a time when you can use some family love and a vacation? ... Wow, I'm impressed by the parents.

I think you are a very lucky lady to have such wonderful parents, and I say GO! To be able to talk to your Mom about your BK is just about the most amazing thing to me. I could never do that. My Mom doesn't live in my world, she never has, so she would never understand how we got in this mess. You are very blessed!

Go enjoy yourself, take your mind off BK. Let your Mom and Dad spoil you and your kids. It will make you happy and make them even happier. Your kids will have a memory that will last a lifetime. It's a well deserved break from the stress of everyday life!!

Have fun and when you get back, we all look forward to hearing all about it!! I am sure I will still be here since my filing date is postponed cause of the stimulus check!
