And so it begins...anyone else under 35?

I retained an attorney today and completed my credit counseling class. As of next week, my bankruptcy paperwork will be filed. I have a huge amount of medical debt from being uninsured and was served a summons last week, so I decided to go ahead and file. My attorney said Chapter 7 was the way to go because I'm a student and do not have assets. I'm still worried about the 341 meeting, and I still feel like a bit of a failure that I'm doing this, especially since I'm under 35 and working towards a masters degree. I was hoping to try and pay everything back but it wasn't an option after I spoke with the attorney. I feel like I was irresponsible when managing my money-I'm just hoping the rest of the Chapter 7 moves smoothly. I've lurked on this forum a lot and learned so much-I'm glad to know other people are in the same boat and getting through the process successfully.

What? The younger you are, the more of a failure you are if you have to file BK? Better you should learn this lesson ten years from now when you don't show so much promise?

I don't get your cutoff date of 35. Ah well, you'll feel differently when you hit 40.

A lot of us were irresponsible managing our money, that's why we're here.

Welcome and good luck to you.

Didn't mean to offend with the age, I kind of just picked it. I don't think 35 is old I guess what I meant in my post is I'm not even really a "grown up" yet in my mind-no house, marriage or kids-but already ended up in financial trouble thanks to a few hospital bills. Thanks for the responses..I'm hoping I'll be able to avoid any further medical debt now that I'm insured!

              Ah.

But seriously, better to learn this lesson now rather than later. Certainly wish I had (and I'm not that much older than you)

It's a tough place to be at any age.

I'm under 35 too. Will be 31 this year. Already divorced, remarried with 2 kids and 2 stepkids. I feel like I've lived a lifetime in my 30 years - LOL. I agree that doing this was really hard but it's hard no matter what your age. Everyone makes mistakes. I'm just happy that I can learn from them and hopefully I won't make the same ones again!

I am now 31 and hubby is 33. We were 29 and 31 when we filed. We know that we made the best choice for our situation. Basically, we were doing fine until ours second child came along and well, we couldn't keep ups with the extra daycare expenses and our credit cards. So we filed. This will be off of our credit reports before our children are even teenages and long before we start to plan for retirment (I know should be planning already).

No offense to those older than me. But I remember when I decided to tell my dad we were going to file. I was so disapointed and was sure he would be disapointed in me. I remember telling him that he taught me better than that. So he started listing off his brothers and sisters who have filed (out of the 10 kids, I know at least 3 have filed). He pointed out that they were older and wiser than me and had made many of the same mistakes.
                  Filed: 10/26/2006
                  Discharged: 03/05/2007
Closed: 5/19/2008 - Asset case due to balance transfer and income tax refund

You're wise beyond your years. Your posts are very good.
It's not what we have in our lives, but who we have in our lives and the quality of those relationships.

I'm 28 and DH is 26. We have a 2yr old and a new one due in 3weeks. We figured out we were in trouble and decided to get out of it NOW instead of digging deeper and deeper and putting off the inevitable. We'll be clear before we hit the point of needing to get cars or college loans for our kids. We just bought a brand new house last year, and are keeping it so we are all set there too.

Sheesh - not a lot you can do about medical debt. Don't beat yourself up. And failed business ventures? I have more respect for someone willing to take such a risk, even if it tanks, than anyone who makes governmental bureaucracy their career.

Sometimes things go wrong. Bankruptcy is a civilized alternative to debtors prison.

(I got a fresh start in my mid-50s.)
