My lawyer has said he wears a suit to these meetings. I was planning on wearing business level slacks and a nice blouse myself....mine is April 9th.

I was always curious about the dress code. I alays wondered if I should under dressed for sympathy of the trustee. Or dressed nicely for the respect of the trustee. Just wondered.

It's all over the map from my experience. I wore khakis and a button shirt. Many people there were in jeans. The local trustee had a suit on, but my attorney was business casual. Don't wear anything flashy, but dress nice -- remember you should respect the Court and be professional and respectful. No fancy watches or jewelry -- simple and basic should suffice.

I wore a white shirt, dress slacks and a sweater. But my 341 was in December. And in the north, everyone wears sweaters in December. The point is, you do not have to wear your Sunday best - just present a respectable image. Afterall, the trustee with whom you meet holds the balance in his hands - and first impressions are lasting impressions.

Are nice khaki shorts out of the question with a button up shirt?

(Keeping in mind I live in Florida).

Thanks for the input everyone.Wish me luck next month.I did all of the filing on my own.Mt friend hired a lawyer and let me look at copies of his papers. This helped me out big time.I don't own a home and have no major assests.I've been unemployed for the last 3 months. The good thing is that the lawyer told my friend that the trutees know the economy is bad were i live and understand.I'll let you know how everything went.

                Your post made me smile.

Gabe, no, they're not out of the question at all. I think I know what you're talking about wearing and it's not bad. I saw all manner of dress at my 341 (also in FL).

But to the ensemble you have planned, make sure you add shoes (real shoes, not flip-flops!!!) and your shorts and shirt are clean and ironed. You want it as close to "business casual" as you can get it.

You may also wish to call the Bankruptcy Clerk's office to ask if there is a dress code for court in your area. In FL I can't imagine that shorts are forbidden, but you never know, so do give them (or your atty) a call just to be sure. Good luck!!!
Nolo Press book on filing Chapter 7, there are others too. (I have no affiliation with Nolo Press; just a happy customer.) Best wishes to you!

In Minneapolis I wore dockers, pressed oxford shirt and dress shoes. In fact my attny wore the same but with a tie.

Just don't walk in there dressing like Donald Trump -

When we had our 341 meeting, one of the worst dressed people in the room was wearing a wrinkled red golf-type collared shirt, dirty jeans and worn out sneakers. Imagine my shock when I realized when he approached the trustee with two other people that he was their LAWYER! The trustee took one look at him and asked, "Did you oversleep again, Fred?" I about bit my tongue off trying not to laugh out loud!
I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice nor a statement of the law - only a lawyer can provide those.

$2000 dollar suit, $500 shoes, lots of bling and a big velvet hat. Just make sure they're listed in your assets.
It's not what we have in our lives, but who we have in our lives and the quality of those relationships.

We saw everything in dress. From dirty raggy sweat pants, to western wear...that cowwboy had serious plumbers crack during the 941 meeting. My husband wore khaki's and dress shirt. I wore nice jeans and nice sweater. The 941 is like Walmart...you will see it all.Just use common sense and be respectful in your attire and all will be fine.
