if you need to be able to pay things online or have direct deposit

what did you or are you doing?

I need to have direct deposit, but i have no bank account. My checks don't show up till the 3rd or 4th otherwise and i have never been late to my apt's and I don't want to start now.

Did anyone get a prepaid direct deposit card like account now, were you able to get a bank account, what did you do? We are going to rack up more debt on the rent if we are slapped with late fees every month

    suggestions?!!!

Why did you close your bank account?
Anyway, I am not sure but I think you should be able to get a checking account during or after bankruptcy at most any bank. It's not credit, it's your money. But maybe some banks are anti-bankruptcy. I don't know.

If you have trouble getting a bank account, you might try
www.bankofinternet.com. I am not sure but I imagine they are bankruptcy friendly and I have heard they are very good - free checking, free checks, direct deposit, even pay interest on checking. You can draw cash out at any atm several times a month and it's free to draw cash out via "cash back" at grocery stores, etc. The one problem is that you can't make a quick deposit today for tomorrow because you have to send it to San Diego via mail if you deposit a check. But of course Direct Deposit is instantaneous.

we had to shut ours down, we were eaten alive when my spouse went down for emergency surgery this fall, and got slammed with over drafts when his checks stopped going in. It was a nightmare, so no more bank account for us

There is no problem with opening a bank account after your 341 I don't think, assuming the bank will take you, which again, I don't think should be a problem.

From what I understand, bank do some type of background checks. I'm not sure what type since it is your own money and they don't have to cover your checks if they bounce, but I would just try it and see if you can. We opened up a new account recently through Wachovia and we did it all online. It was a pain calling them to re-verify everything, but better than going in and doing it face to face. Oh, and also, you have to have I think it was $100.00 to put into the account. So if you do have any prepaid visa or m/c you can use that or if you have Wachovia near you, you can do everything online and then go into a branch and deposit it into your account.

Some banks run your credit and they make sure nothing is showing up with check cashing companies.

Hi there, I signed up with Account now. Its a pre paid visa, but they also offer online bill pay as well as a checking account # for direct depo. I was paying many fee's in check cashing places so this works fine. There is a 9.95 monthly fee.

                        $9.95/month! Ouch!
I'd try to get a free checking. A number of places offer them:
Washington Mutual, Bankofinternet.com are 2. Wamu has physical banks (at least here in Calif) and bankofinternet is web only. Of the 2, bankofinternet is better. They offer not only free checking, they pay YOU to hold your checking account money (interest checking) and they offer free bill pay too and free checks.

I started a new bank account at the Federal Credit Union. They do not allow me to have a real credit card, but gave me a visa Debit card and I have checks, as well as direct deposit. When I went in there, I said right off, "I'm in the middle of a Bankruptsy, and forclosure." They took a look at my credit report, and then said, I was Okay, and gave me an account.

Some banks may or may not do a credit check. I think it depends on the bank.

However, I suspect that if you have the minimum deposit for opening an account, you should be able to find a bank that is willing to give you a checking account. I was able to open up a checking account at two different banks while in active Chpt. 13 bankruptcy. I just needed the minimum amount to open.

You may also get a check card (or debit) that will have a Visa or Mastercard logo on the card. You can use it "like" a credit card, but the money is directly debited from your checking account. You will be able to use this to make purchases online as you give your card information as if it was a credit card. I have even been able to purchase airplane tix with my mastercard logo'd check card. The only thing is, you HAVE to have the funds available in your checking account in order for it to "go through." You will not, however, be able to rent cars, as most car rental places prefer you have a valid credit card (not check/debit card) to reserve the car (although you can *pay* with the check card.)

The next time you get a check cashed, take some of the cash and open up a checking account at a bank - it may not be the bank you bk'd on, but I don't doubt you'll find a bank willing to do business with you. You just may not be able to get their actual credit card.
