Does the trustee ask how you got into financial trouble?

I realize the trustee is there to see if you have any assets but I am wondering if they ask how you got into this mess?

Mine asked specifically because our income had decreased significantly...we had moved from FL back to MI and it caused us to lose a lot of income. That's the only reason he asked us and when we answered, he understood and left it at that.

Mine didn't totally ask that, but he said- "looks like you've been living off credit cards for a while?" and we said yes, and then my husband lost his job, which was obvious because we gave him a bunch of unemployment stubs.

I heard you're supposed to be kind of vague with your answer.

Some ask, some don't. But I haven't heard of a trustee that really forces issue, so a vague, general answer is usually acceptable.

Ours did....both for our 13, and then again for our conversion. Nothing too crazy---both 341's were only about 3 mins. long.

Ours asked every person at the meeting but everyone gave a general, vague answer and the trustee didn't pursue it.

My husband and I both own our own businesses in Michigan where the economy is pretty bad and our businesses weren't doing as well as they had been in previous years which we could prove with tax returns. The trustee accepted that.

Our's did not and we were interviewed by the US Trustee too.
He asked my wife if she was unemployed (yes) and if she was looking for work (yes) and how much money she made in her last job. That's all. Otherwise it was just the usual questions about the forms the attorney filled out. Oh, and they asked me if I'd transferred any property which I had to say yes - a car - which my attorney had chosen (or forgotten) to put in the petition so I had to amend the petition with that info. It was all on the up and up so no problem.

In my opinion, the answers are getting easier for more people. Economy deteriorating, people getting laid off, housing market crashing, subprime mess....

Never mind the normal reasons: Divorce, Gambling, Medical, ran up too much cc debt............

I was just curious. Basically most of our trouble started when we borrowed money to pay bills as our former house was foreclosing. We were planning to pay back the loans with the proceeds from the house and ended up losing about $30,000 in equity when it foreclosed. The loans just delayed things for a little while and now we are in a bigger mess. Bad decision!
