How soon before I expect a suit/judgement?

I am no expert but in my opinion... it would be easier for him to track it and make follow through because he is local to you. If he were in another state, it may be harder for him to do all the paperwork and submit it, see a judge, that sort of thing.

If you can, pay him a little each month until you can file. This will help keep him off your back. I would say don't pay anything if your going to file but you don't want to deal with all that court mess too.
