Cashing a check at a bank..

I'm just that type of person for saving statements and have a file cabinet with my credit statements etc up to a year sometimes two anyways as well as bank statements, you never know what the future holds. AND since I'm a gambler I never know when Uncle Sam comes knocking at my door serving AUDIT papers!

If you cash a large check at a bank, you often have to call them ahead of time to make sure they have that much cash on hand. I was surprised when a friend told me that he wanted to get $9k in cash out of his own bank account and they would not give it to him, they said they did not have that much cash on hand, and that he would have to come back the next day.

I found it shocking that a bank would not be able to give over a "measly" $9k in cash from someone's account, but that was what they told my friend. They said in the future he should call a day ahead if he wanted that much cash. And this was a major national bank, not a little local bank.

I worked as a teller in a bank for a number of years. Banks don't keep truck loads of money laying around in the vault. The bank has to pay for the use of the money. It also has to do with the anticipated money they will receive that week in commercial deposits. I would ship out a LARGE sum of money knowing that I would receive that in two days worth of grocery and cigarette stores money. The banks do have the money to cash the checks, it was probably in one dollar bills, and most people don't like that.
