Does filing BK stop a garnishment?

Yes, (but it depends on what the debt is for) but you have to take steps to notify the various parties involved...once you file BK, you need to take a copy of the petition cover pages and give them to the payroll/HR dept of the employer as well as immediately notify the garnishing party (do not wait for the court to notify).
If the debt for which your wages are being garnished is nondischargeable, the BK stops the garnishment temporarily, but the garnishment can restart either upon the party filing a Motion to Lift Stay or upon your Discharge.

The day after we filed, the parapro sent notice to the Law Firm that had a garnishment on my wages. The garnishment stopped immediately, with the following paycheck.
Good luck...
