Can you open a Checking account after bankruptcy?

I was curious as to whether or not it is possible to open a checking account after you have filed for bankruptcy? We currently have a checking account but are including it in the bankruptcy for NSF fees (long story - we have paid all of the people the checks were made out to).

Normally, I wouldn't worry about even having another checking account ever again but my employer cuts his payroll checks from the same institution that we are including in our bankruptcy. I am fearful that if I attempt to cash my payroll check at that institution that they will grab my entire check (even if I tell them that we are no longer customers there). I have resorted to using one of those check cashing services but I was charged almost $20 for cashing a $300 check yesterday!

I was wondering, once we are under the bankruptcy stay, can I go to this institution and cash my payroll check (not using our account) without fear of their grabbing my money?

Also, once the bankruptcy is discharged, how hard is it to open a checking account with a different bank? Will they not allow us to open an account because we included our prior bank in the bankruptcy?

It all depends, did you have to write a lot of bad checks prior to filing BK? If you did and the checks were never honored you info was most likely reported to Check Systems. Which banks always do a verification on prior to issuing people checking accounts along with debit cards.

Even if you did not write bad checks in the past, getting a checking isn't always possible with derogatory credit. You'll most likely be unable to get a new Visa Check/Debit card at this point either.

The best method of getting over this hump is to see if you bank offers a Secured Checking Account. If they do, let them secure about $1000 - $2000 of your cash to as gaurantee against the checks you write each month. Some of these programs also let you earn small interest on the monies secured too. Typically after 6 months to 1 year of trouble free check writing they''ll let you have an Unsecured Checking Account.

Be forewarnded though..........you'll have to shop around for a bank or credit union that offers programs as such.

    Good Luck!

Once your BK 7 paperwork has been stamped and discharged, the bank cannot recuperate it's lossess against you.

YES You can open another checking account

        Hi

I don't know where you live but if you are near a US Bank you can open a new checking account as long as you do not have any fraud on a former account. NSf doesn't matter. They have a 2nd change program.

Yes! You can open a checking account after bankruptcy

If you live near a USBank, you should be able to open another account. As long as you do not have fraud listed with check sytems you can open one. Nsf isn't held against you. They have a "second chance program" available.

I can confirm this - I just went to US bank's website and was approved for a bank acct with a debit card. I think as long as you haven't wrote any bad checks and are not in the chex system you should be ok...

most places you can open a plain old savings account w/o worry about the chex systems. Then you can cash your payroll check there and save all those fees
