Chapter 7 credit bureau reporting laws

I filed Chapter 7 in 1998. I was told it would stay on my credit report for 7 years. Sept 2006 was the anniversary. I recently learned the bankruptcy laws have changed and chapter 7 bankruptcy stay for 10 years. I am receiving conflicting information some say - I filed "before" the law changed there there for the bankruptcy should be removed.
I cannot find any supporting documentation to support this so I can supply it to the credit bureau for removal.
Does anyone know when the reporting law/policy changed?

Can any advise what I should/could do?

First, the length of time a BK can stay on your credit report has NOTHING to do with the Bankruptcy laws.

What you are looking for is the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), (section 605 to be exact). Also, in these cases, it really doesn't matter when you filed, most of these types of laws incorporate and supersede prior versions.

Basically, regardless of when you file, the rule is, BK's can be reported for up to 10 years. Most parts of the FCRA were made effective on or about 1996.

I know my Bk in the early 90's was on my file for like 10 years, not to worry potential employers/creditors tend to know this and dont count it against you! After 7 years you should be in good shape (regardless if it still appears on your credit history), and you've been good with your credit (building it back up, etc)

Yeah, I filed Chapter 7 in 1989, the reporting guidelines were ten years even back that far, and it did report for 10 years, but honestly, it only affected me for about 2 years. After 2 years it was like it never happened.

You could try to dispute it off the report. Look at your reports and make sure every thing about the BK is reporting correctly, dates, case number, etc. I've seen many people get a BK off their reports due to incorrect information.
