My lawyer sent me a fee agreement for filing C7. It says it'll cost me $600 for her service, $209 to file, and if there is anything that occurs outside of "normal" bankruptcy issues that she charges $165 per hour to be paid in FULL!!

Well the $209 is right but $600.
Go to the bookstore and pay $29.95 and get one of the books. The BK forms are right on the internet and you can enter them on-line, print and file. Tha'ts was I did a year ago and everything went fine. Just helped a friend of mine do the same. The only problem I hit, if you can call it a problem was that every form was so complete and everything done proper the judge and trustee kept asking if I had help. I showed them the book. Right there in court the judge told me that some of the attnys could learn a thing or two about paperwork prep. Chapt 7 isn't rocket science, it's being able to start over.

we paid 776 for our lawyer fee. plus the 209. i've read in a coupld different post that its not always wise to file with out the help from a lawyer. they can answer all types of questions which isn't included in the "do it yourself" versions. i know its a lot of money but i have peace of mind knowing that if i have a worry or question i can call my lawyer and have it answered.

I'm paying $750 plus filling fees (~$250), anything else is $170/hr extra. I wish I wouldn't have ever hired a lawyer, I have been reading this forum, ended up buying a book and really understand about the process now. It's true, it's not rocket science! My lawyer didn't show to my 341 meeting and is ignoring my phone calls, since I need a motion filed to sell my house. I really, really, really wish I would have never hired him, now the court tells me I have to go through him to get anything done.Edyta...
