    Chapter 7 Discharge

    Hello,

Completed my 341 meeting about two weeks ago, I would like to know how long after the meeting you receive your discharge?

I had a good 341 meeting, The meeting was three minutes long, The trustee had to write a no assets report in my situation.

    Thanks

A debtor is not entitled to the discharge until 60 days have elapsed from the first 341 Meeting. That means you have about 6 weeks more to wait. Once the 60 days have passed and no one has sought to have the discharge denied, the discharge will come soon thereafter.

My 341 hearing was on 04/29/2919, The discharge order was effective 07/30/2019. And, of course, that's when the official "clock" starts. But be careful! There is one more step after the discharge... the case's"administrative closure" date which is controlled normally by the trustee. As long as you complete all the trustee's requirements in a prompt manner, post discharge, (mostly pay them all the $$$ you owe them), that administrative closure becomes a "formality." But if you mess something up, miss a payment or do something the trustee doesn't like, they can file with the judge to rescind the discharge. Be careful!

All the trustee requirements are completed, After the dust settles I’ll research more on rebuilding credit. I haven’t used credit in a long time before filing bankruptcy and paid cash for everything, Probably go the secured card route to start my rebuilding journey.

That's the plan I ended up following as well...

I hadn't used credit for about 7 years when my discharge came through and ended up opting for a high(ish) limit secured card with a $5,000 limit as my first credit card. The secured card graduated to unsecured and my security deposit was returned almost exactly six months after my card arrived in the mail, and in the 30 months since it graduated, the credit limit has grown to $11,500 without me even asking.

Maybe I'm kidding myself, but I often attribute my successful rebuild to starting with that one card. Funny thing, the only real difference between now and when I was in my Chapter 13 is instead of using my debit card for everything, I now use my various rewards credit cards (which I pay off monthly); the benefit here is in the three years since I got my secured card (which offered a 1% cash back reward while secured), I've earned over $3,000 on purchases I would have made regardless, meaning three-grand more than I would have gotten if I'd continued using my debit card.
