Ive decided to finally take the plunge and file. WIll be filing in about 60 days. I need to do some work to my car to keep it going. The problem I have, is I have to buy about $200 worth of basic hand tools to be able to make the repairs. Will this raise eyebrows with the trustee? I dont want to cause a problem, but I also would rather not spend any money I dont have to for a mechanic. Hope that makes sense. Thanks everyone.

If it's for the health and safety of yourself/family, feed your yourself/family, (reasonably) clothe yourself/family, to produce income (get to work), or other "non-luxury" items, then no one will say anything. In fact, I would be hard pressed to tell you about a Trustee that was concerned with a debtor fixing their car just before filing. I know cases where a debtor purchased a car 2 weeks before filing with no issues.
Should you use credit to do this? I can't provide you with a legal answer but $200 for essentials is not something that any creditor or Trustee would be wasting their time pursuing. I could be proven wrong because it depends on the tenacity of the creditor (family/friend/ex-spouses are the worst creditors!).
(Just for clarity, I'm not suggesting that you go out and buy a new car... if you can't afford to do so.)Chapter 7 (No Asset/Non-Consumer) Filed (Pro Se) 7/08 (converted from Chapter 13 - 2/10)

Personally, I would not think twice about repairing a vehicle that is necessary for your health, safety, and making a living (and/or attending school). I would call that a necessity.Chapter 7 (No Asset/Non-Consumer) Filed (Pro Se) 7/08 (converted from Chapter 13 - 2/10)
