It's been a year since we filed Chapter 13 and I wanted to thank everyone in this forum for all the great posts and advice.
When I realized that bankruptcy was in our future I was scared, very sad, and unsure about what it all meant. The BK Forum was my life line. Many nights I sat up searching the forum for answers. I was able to see a better future and make plans and eventually I stopped crying.
I'm a small business owner and our income fluctuates and the recession is still kicking our butts. We've made it through one year by sticking to a strict budget. We grew a big garden last year and plan to go bigger this year. We think about every purchase, and then we think again, and then we shop hard for the best prices. We've learned that buying big doesn't always mean saving big--that Sam's Club membership is over! Our kids (both in college) have learned that the bank of Mom & Dad is closed and they've learned to make better choices also.
We had our best Christmas in years--all cash! I was able to travel and spend a week with my parents when my dad was hospitalized. We were able to do several improvements to our property for our business last summer with barter and cash.
Chapter 13 is hard--but it is not the end of the world. This year has been better for us than the two previous years when we struggled each month to pay the credit cards. 12 months down....48 to go!
