Safe to open a new checking account?

    Hi,
My dear boyfriend has filed, but has not had the meeting of creditors nor the confirmation of plan. Just filed his case on August 5.

He would like to open a new checking account -- his last one was seized by some creditor years ago -- he really struggled with being garnished for way too long, but it is what it is.

Can he open a new account now? He never had bounced checks or anything like that -- nothing about the checking account was included in the bankruptcy, no unpaid overdrafts or anything. He just wants to be able to have direct deposit and a debit card again.

    Thanks!
    Catherine

I don't know where you live, but we just opened new accounts at BB&T. They're mostly here in the Southeast, but seem to be a great bank so far. We had to apply, but I don't know what they're looking for if they cleared us for new accounts. The Branch Assoc I spoke with even said that "everyone deserves a second chance" when I told her about the BK.

We had switched to another bank right before we filed in Feb, but they found out about our BK (we told them back then) and they were jerking us around A LOT on the simplest of things. Our "Free Checking" magically started accruing fees, our Savings account was closed for no reason and they pretty much pushed us out of their system.
