Been denied employment or promotion due to BK?

I have, but it was with a company where I had to handle large amounts of money. I think it will depend on what company you are applying to work for and what type of clearance you have to hold. If you are wanting to deal with large amounts of money then an employer will normally look at your credit more in depth. Sometimes if you explain the reason's why you had to file it is fine.
Right now with the economy employers have a larger pool of applicants and can be a little bit picky when hiring people. Sometimes you may even have to change fields just to find a job.
Also just because a company performs a credit check does not mean they are pulling your credit score. They weigh in other factors. It can be anywhere from checking how long you have lived at your current address and whether you have opened a lot of new accounts without the money to pay the creditors. That will send red flags to potential employers who do check credit reports. With my last company I performed a lot of the HR responsibilities and honestly the credit report we checked was just basic information. Credit scores had no weight on whether the company would hire you or not.Chapter 7 filed on 4/23/2010
