Moving from Ohio to California (have not filed yet)

From my own research, I think it is probably better for me to file after I move.

Does anyone have any input as the pros/cons of filing in California vs Ohio?

If you are moving soon, I would file after I move. If nothing else, you don't want to have to come back to Ohio for any court dates.

Either way you will need to use Ohio exemptions when you file (unless you wait 2 years).

Ugghhhhh, really? So, I am being transferred to California...getting paid the same, but I will have to use Ohio's exemptions for things like rent? Big difference in rent between Ohio and California.

You can use the Calfornia IRS allowable expenses for things like rent, food, etc.

For property exemptions like personal property, car, wildcard, etc. you need to use Ohio's list.

        Hope that clears it up!

Edit: Actually, as you pointed out. There is another big reason to wait until you move to file. Your rent, food, etc. expenses will all be higher.

Except California doesn't allow federal, so the wait is 2 years.
