Forgot to pay 2007 Pers. Prop Tax...

My husband and I were looking at our local county property tax website today and realized that we forgot to pay the taxes (about $190) on one of our cars last year. The taxes were due 12/31/08 and we have not received a single letter of delinquincy or anything. We were even allowed to renew the car tags in March with no notice of our oversight. We had no idea we didn't pay them and because we didn't realize this they were not listed as a debt in our ch 13 paperwork. What should we do? Just pay them or go through our attorney?

If you have the money, I would suggest just paying them. It would cost you more for you to have the plan amended to include them if you are already confirmed. If you can't pay them, see if you can set up payments through the state.

It's this great tax you have to pay on your cars and any vehicles you own...

I'd love to just pay them and be done with it. Although it wasn't in our budget we could pay them and that would by far be the easiest thing to do. My husband is going to call them on Monday and see if we can do that. Thanks for your replies.

            hey kornellred,

Here in Florida there is no state income tax... so everyone pays a bunch of other taxes, like personal property tax. I have to admit... seems odd. But I've been here almost 18 years, and when we first moved calculated the differences. It was much less expensive here than in michigan at the time. (Not sure about now, though!)

Personal property tax on a car is also know as excise tax in some states (such as here in Massachusetts)

I am assuming you mean "12/31/07" and not "12/31/08." For that small amount of money, just pay them. Tell them you are in active Chapter 13 and, due to that, if you could get permission from them to pay in portions over a few to several months. Sometimes they will work with you if you are in active Chapter 13.

Oops...I did mean 12/31/07. Turns out after a couple of calls we did pay them, however the account now carries a "legal" flag and they will not send us the bill that is due in 2008. Is that because of the automatic stay (or whatever the term is)?
