    well then i would be asking gramma to sign on the dotted line. My mom did it for my son. And my mother's reward, an engineer that can pay all of his own debt. LOLOLOLOL ( and because of my own financial woes is very frugal with his money, so kids do learn from their parents) Keep me posted. With your daughter's nursing degree, employment will never be an issue for her. I wish her the best in her senior year of college.

      DOA, I'm a RN - there are loans and grants specifically meant to help pay for nursing school.

      Check out these links to see if they can help your daughter -

      Apply for a student loan today. Whether studying online or on campus, Sallie Mae's student loans can help cover up to 100% of college or graduate school costs.

      Also have her check on the state and local level as well as her school. With the nursing shortage, many states have opened up loans and scholarships to help nurses finish school, especially if they will agree to stay in the state and practice there for a specific number of years after graduating.

      FinAid has a great search engine for grants, scholarships, and loans that will restrict searches to specialty areas like nursing - http://www.finaid.org/ - well worth a visit!

      Hope this helps! We need all the RNs we can get these days....and also we "golden oldie" RNs do hope to retire someday!
      I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice nor a statement of the law - only a lawyer can provide those.

        I haven't read all the replies to this but having gone through Chapter 13 and our daughter starting college the last year of our Plan, we were told by our attorney to go with her to the financial aid office, explain the situation, and us being in bankruptcy would benefit her as to obtaining financial aid. After going through the routine of applying first through the government, upon decline from the government (you have to be almost extremely destitute to obtain those funds) she was granted a Stafford Loan in her name only which covered everything. We went through the same process for her second year of college and she again was granted a Stafford Loan in her name only. As I said, I haven't yet read all the replies or any other circumstances as to your particular situation, but being in BK is of benefit to the child when that family files for that child's financial aid.

          Also, check with any local hospitals she might be interested in working at after graduation, don't know why I didn't think of this.
          My hospital is half owned by Community Health Systems, half owned by the Share Foundation, a local non profit organization formed when our county hospital sold out to Columbia HCA 12 years ago. Share foundation offers scholarships for students in need going into healthcare professions. I had a Share foundation scholarship. It paid my tuition for all 4 semesters of RN school, plus $100 semester for books. In return, I had to sign an agreement to work x amount of time( I think it was 6 months) for each semester they funded. If I left before my time was up, I had to repay the tuition money.
          I can't remember where you are, but I just about bet there is a hospital that offers something close.
          Chapter 13 filed -8/12/04
          Plan approved- 7/11/05
          Date discharged--10-12-2007
          Date closed- 12/6/2007:yes2::yes2:

                Here is what happened to us

                We had two kids attend school during BK. The oldest was a junior. We basically told the financial aid office we were in BK and could not get a PLUS loan. We also stated we had no one to cosign a loan. They gave our child a stafford loan as if they were already 24. When the second came up, two years later, the school (different from the first) told us we would have to apply and be turned down to do the same thing. So we did, and lo and behold, we were approved! Apparently making your payments on time and having no credit cards gives you a big boost, BK or not! Well, you can't get new credit without the trustee's permission, so we had postpone college for a while. Believe me, you don't want to talk to the trustee for any reason in the district we live in. And under the new law, I definetly wouldn't.

                  She received her notification of rejection from Sallie Mae yesterday. She can't get a loan on her own, so now she will be forced to put off school until we can somehow (her included) come up with the rest of the money. She was planning on getting married next fall, and her "real dad" has said he would help with that, but not with school. I know why, because as soon as she is married, he is no longer obligated to help with ANYTHING. Oh yeah, his help is $1000 max. You can almost by a dress, a tux, and invitations for that maybe. So much for her hopes of a good job and nice wedding for now.

                    I'm so sorry, DOA. You all must be very sad, angry, and frustrated today However, as hard as today is, life does have an odd way of working itself out over time. It's just so hard to wait until the brass ring comes by again. Hang in there. Tell your daughter to keep checking back and reapplying for nursing-specific loans through public and private institutions - don't give up!
