LITR so very happy for you !! Its such a great feeling to have it over & the debt along with it... Good Luck to you ..
P.S. My credit union offered me a refinance but it really didn't lower my payments all that much . The thing that sticks in my mind is the first 10 years I have paid a lot of interest so if I would refinance wouldn't I just be doing the same over & paying a lot of interest & little principle ??????????? Not sure I really want to do that . I was just thinking of paying extra on my loan every month towards principle which makes more sense to me.. Am I missing something ??Last edited by klandsb; 06-03-2015, 12:40 PM.Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones

klandsb, mortgages charge interest on the current principal balance. As the principal balance decreases, the portion of the payment that must go to paying interest on that balance also decreases. So, if you refinance at the same or lower interest rate, without increasing the principal balance of the loan, then you will not go back to paying mostly interest.
A decision to refinance should not focus only on the monthly payment. You should compare the remaining overall cost of the current loan with the remaining overall cost of the new loan, including whatever expenses you have to pay to refinance. A slightly lower payment due to a lower interest rate could make a huge difference over the life of a 20 or 30 year mortgage. Getting a lower payment by extending the length of the loan will cost more in the long run, but may be a good decision for somebody having trouble making their payments. For me, the cost comparison can only be a guess because I have an adjustable rate mortgage. My rate is very low right now and has been for a few years, so I have been able to pay down a lot of principal. But, I am willing to start paying more interest now in order to have the certainty of a fixed rate.
Making extra payments of principal is always a good idea.LadyInTheRed is in the black!

Thanks LITR. I have 8 years left on a 20yr mortgage @ 5.75%... I would also like to retire in 8 years so I am trying to start my planning now... I am so afraid of making a mistake on any financial matter since I feel so blessed to have finished my bankruptcy and have a clean slate... I am a single women and sometimes wish I had someone to go over this stuff with and make a wise decision. ha,haThose who live in glass houses should not throw stones

Congratulations! I hope we aren't far behind. Our final payment was in late April or mid May. They last needed document was there on May 1st. I'm not sure what is taking so long, but the deduction keeps coming out. It has been 5 long years and we are ready!Filed Chapter 13 on 3-31-10. 341 completed 5/20/10

I must have filed about the same time. Is there a way to check a certain court in Pacer to see what is currently being discharged? I assume they are done in order. I'm wondering if they got backlogged. Mine doesn't even say completed yet. Also I notice the trustee's fee is continuing to be deducted out of payments that are coming in. Can they continue to collect fees after I have paid everything?
Ok checked Pacer for those that have been discharged. Some were filed the same time as mine, but the number is 02 instead of 03 which I assume is the month the number was created. Nothing that starts with 03 has been discharged in the last month. I do wonder if something I missing though. How would I know if they were waiting on something?Filed Chapter 13 on 3-31-10. 341 completed 5/20/10
