My 341 (pro se) was this morning!

Southern District of Ohio. Quickly noticed we were about half the age of everyone in the room. Felt a little out of place being so young in there, and without an attorney. lol

We were the only pro se debtors to be seen the entire day. That made me nervous. We got there around an hour early. Traffic in downtown is just unpredictable, so is the parking. So we sat and listen to around 10 cases before ours came up. Some were a little long, mainly because they had real estate. One guy had like 4 cars and you could tell the Trustee was interested in that, for sure. Half of them were told their cases would remain open until their tax returns were filed and the Trustee received a copy.

I was very nervous, but became less nervous when the Trustee started joking around about Black Friday with the debtors who work in retail. We were the last to go for the hour. There was one other debtor in the room with their attorney.

We gave him our identification and then he began with the standard questions. He then asked about our car. He thought that I did not list the car in the Schedule, but I pointed out that it was on D. He apologized for his oversight. He then joked around with my husband about how his title (Sous Chef) means he is the one that does all of the work. He then looked at our bank statement to ensure what was in our account on the day of filing. He also looked at our tax return, which our refund was around $4500 last year. He asked if the income would be different and I advised him it would be around $3000 less and I also provided him with an estimate of what we expect to receive next year, which the estimate was around $2400. I fully expected him to take it, but he then said that based on the information provided he would not ask me to provide him with the 2010 tax return!!!

He then advised us that we would remain a no asset case, and we should see our report of no distribution soon. He also said to look in the mail for our discharge as soon as it is able to be done (which is Jan. 18, 2011.)

    No creditors showed up.

He also thanked me for all of the information I provided and told me I did a good job! How flattering!

What a breeze! He was so incredibly nice and polite. He didn't treat us any different than those with attorney's. If anything, the people with attorney's seemed to have more issues than we did. Some attorney's forgot important paperwork too.

I'm so excited! Happy Thanksgiving to us!

I may be smarter than an attorney, but I'm not one. No legal advice here, people.

Congratulations!! How inspiring for all the Pro Se filers!! I think it was nice of him to tell you about remaining No Asset - do most trustees let you know if you "pass"?

He actually told every debtor about their asset status. The only ones who were not told about being no asset was because of the pending tax refund they may receive. They were told their case would remain open until that information was processed. But he was very thorough and made sure to tell everyone what to expect. I think we had a really great Trustee.

Yes, I hope this shows other no asset, easy Chapter 7 people that with a little hard work, they can do it as well.

I'm just a 24 year old student in college. No experience with this stuff. I couldn't have done it without my Nolo and definitely not without this website and the wonderfully helpful people on here.

It is because of all of you that it has been a success, and for that, I truly thank you all.

All in all, our Chapter 7 has cost us around $350. That includes the filing fee, parking fees, and the money I spent on stamps and envelopes to send out my COA to all of my creditors. Best money I ever spent (besides the $50 we spent to get eloped. LOL!)
