We get to the courthouse and enter the 341 room were there are a couple of nice looking people, a trustee seated at a large table, and the lawyers clustered at the end of the room. The trustee called us up one by one. There were people leaving the room after their 341s and people entering to wait for their meetings. We could hear everything that was discussed and the trustee had a tape recorder going for each meeting.
None of our creditors showed up. The trustee went through the basic questions. "Did you read the phamplet that describes the different types of bankruptcies." "Did you look over your paperwork and do you agree with the schedules." etc.
Then he asked us about our house and our cars. He wanted to make sure we were aware that we are about $15000 underwater in our house and are we sure we wanted to keep it. We answered yes and he moved on to the cars. We really aren't upside down in our vehicle loans and we exempted the equity so he just asked if we were reaffirming and moved on from them.
Then he looked through our list of debts and asked us why we had so much credit card debt. We explained everything and he seemed satisfied with the answer. (Car accident, DH couldn't work for 5 months, credit cards doubling from interest and fees...)
He then signed the order abandoning any interest in our property and he wished us luck.
Joining the 60 day club and breathing a sigh of relief!
