    Help needed with Sallie Mae

Ok... Long story short. I just received a summons from the courts from Sallie Mae about my Private student loan debt. I haven't been able to pay them due to being unemployed for nearly a year as well as the payments have been too high to afford paying because my jobs in the past just have not paid me where I was expecting to be paid.

My court date is coming up next month, however I finally landed a new position in another state (Texas) and will not be able to be at that court case to defend myself at all. I've tried to negotiate with them to set up a payment plan that I can actually afford (which isn't really alot, but it better than nothing) and they have refused. They either wanted me to settle for about 1/2 of what I owed, but I have no equity nor money to come remotely close to that amount.

If they do go ahead and I cannot get this changed to where I'll be living in a week, what will they do? Can they seize my checking account or savings (that has not alot in it)? What can they do if I am no longer a resident of this state? (Missouri)

I haven't contacted a lawyer yet, since I really don't have any money and will be scraping by just to get myself moved down for this new job. I'm just overwhelmed by all of this and truly do not know what I can do at this point. What can/should I do?

I don't want to declare bankruptcy as I know that it's nearly impossible to get student loans discharged. I also don't want this to come back and bite me in the hind quarters later on as well.

I appreciate any help that anyone can give me. Thanks.
