    Student Loans Deferred

Is it difficult to get a deferment on student loans, there seem to be many people getting them what is the process?

easier for a forebearance. Just call and ask and its usually granted on the spot.

If you have a lot of fed sub loans definately try for a deferment. Deferments have total time frames so if you have used them in the past you may not have time left. Economic Hardship 3 years and unemployment is 2 years. Forbearances are technically easier but in a deferment the gov't pays the interest on your sub loans while you are responsible for the un-sub portion. In a forbearance you pay for the interest on both.

How long is a forbearance? Mine was set in July or August of 2008, and I was discharged May 2009.

If you can get it a deferment is better because the interest doesn't accrue. If you can't get one, request a forbearance.

you typically just call your lender and see what they offer.. I did a only interest payment last year for about 8 months, and then just called last month for a defferment. My husband isn't working and i couldn't even afford the $125 interest only payment. They offered 6 months defferement with no documentation. After that it's back to paying.. I believe with a foreberance there's a lot more involved and you have to meet certain criteria..

Thanks. They automatically entered it into a deferment when I called to tell them I was filing bankruptcy. They have not entered anything negative on my credit report yet since I called them about the bankruptcy.

I had voluntary forebarance on my federal loans before I filed for bankruptcy... I still had at least 2 or 3 years available to me to do the forebarance. Will Sallie Mae allow me to continue forebarance after I'm discharged?
