    Cosigned loan with AES

Well for starters, this forum just explained to me why I didn't have a payment due on my AES loan when I logged into their website today...

    I have another question however.

I co-signed on my ex's student loans (only $5K, but obviously I still wish I hadn't in hindsight). Normally, when I log into AES's website, there's a section at the bottom that says "Loans you have Cosigned on" or something to that effect. That section is now GONE. I can't get his loan to come up at all.

Did the BK remove me as the cosigner on the loan? Is this a permanent thing, or is it just like the auto-deferment and it will come back after my BK is final? I just have my 341 today, it went smooth as silk but one never knows how the next 10 days will go...

Anyway. Clearly, I hope I'm off the hook with the cosigner thing, but I question how realistic that hope is.

    Thanks all!

    Hi Odie:

I am not a student loan person; others with that type experience will have to respond to answer the question. However, from what I have read here, no the BK did NOT remove you as a co-signer. The debt was probably defered until after the BK has run its course, and then the student loan will kick in again, with interest.

The poster and Guru, lrprn, had some pithy comments about student loans today. Do a search for her comments today, and you will get a lot of info.

    Good luck~~!

No, you are still a co-signer on the loan. Since you filed bk, currently he is solely responsible for paying on his $5K loan. However, if he ever defaults, because student loans are not discharged in bankruptcy, the lender will come back to you to demand payment on the $5K (or whatever it has ballooned to by then).

Anyway. Clearly, I hope I'm off the hook with the cosigner thing, but I question how realistic that hope is.
You aren't off the hook unless your ex keeps making the payments. Hope for your sake he is a responsible debt payer!
