Open a bank account at a former creditor?

Chase keeps sending one of those "$125 if you open a checking account" offers to my address. It's generic, not specifically targeted at me. I could use an extra $125, but I'm not sure if it's safe to open an account with them. I know they aren't supposed to take any of my money post-BK, but if they did I couldn't afford to sue them to get it back.

Don't see why not 'go for it'.
A relative of mine got a Chase Credit card with a decent credit line within the first year post bk. What's noteworthy is that Chase was one of the creditors that got 'stiffed' on the bk.....

I posted this exact question maybe a month ago.... I ended up going into the Chase branch and opening a checking account with direct deposit of my paycheck.

No issues whatsoever and I put the $125 bonus into my new savings account!

Watch the fees. It seems banks are starting to charge more and more for checking accounts. Not sure if Chase is one of them.

None of the no-fee accounts are eligible for the offer. However, if you have direct deposit or a minimum balance they'll waive the fees.

            Bluemartini,

I was thinking about going back to Chase to get this 125.00. Chase was my primary account before I filed, and I did have a CC and my mortgage with them. The CC got discharged (7K), my mortgage not reaffirmed and Im still trying for a mod with them now.

My main question for you though is...did they give you a VISA logo'ed debit also? My current local bank refused my debit card because I applied for the account after I filed BK so right now Im without debit....and I want one....

            Thanks.

$125 is nice but open an account a a financial institution you want to do business with. If it's Chase then great but if you'd rather be with BOFA, Perkstreet or some other bank is it really worth $125 to do business with someone you'd rather not?
