    Which bank?

I'm looking to move away from Bank of America since they offer me nothing and I have the option of going with USAA banking or there is a local credit union I could join. We might end up moving away from this area depending on where my husband finally finds a job so the local CU might be a no go if that happens.

I've heard USAA is great, but the only drawback is there are no physical locations (unless you live in San Antonio Texas).

After my discharge I will be opening a savings account with USAA, for my emergency fund. I don't want to use my regular bank for that fund.

I hate to refer people away from USAA but for an emergency savings account I would recommend American Express. Their high yield personal savings is at 1.15%, which is not much but is a whole lot better than what a lot of banks are offering these days.

      A life lesson well learned.

Thank you for the referral! I'm not loyal to any particular company. Is the American Express account just a regular savings account? Do you they have an approval process like they do for their credit cards? I'm actually still in good standing with them for the most part, I had a card with them long ago and it was always on time and is long paid off....I will certainly check them out. I want to make my money work for me so the higher yield on savings the better.

I have our auto and renters insurance currently with USAA. I'm thinking doing our regular checking and savings with them and our emergency fund somewhere else. Maybe First Tech FCU since I found how to still get membership there. I wish my husband could find a job so we could actually start our emergency fund. Right now we are barely scraping the monthly bills with nothing left. I have sold a bunch of stuff and cut our bills as far as I can and still come up short some months. Thank goodness the bankruptcy got rid of the medical debt that was about to start garnishing my wages or I don't know what we would have done.

Also look at capital one's online savings. Must have 5k to get the good interest but you can transfer to and from using capital one. My wife has one and she's satisfied.
