Disputing wrong entries on credit report

My husband and i have been discharged and closed from bankruptcy for a little over a year now. And were trying to get into the process of rebuilding our credit and apply for a USDA mortgage. I was looking at our credit reports and noticed there are some things that are not noted right. In his things that neededto be shown as a $0 balance are being showed as " charged off" which is not how their supposed to be noted right?? and other things IIB are shown with $0 balance. Same with mine.. mine actually only showed 1 thing as charged off that i had to dispute. Anyways I was wondering we had multiple capital one cards that were IIB and bankruptcy attoney only sent one letter out to cap one showing ch 7 filing and said they would have to close all our accounts or they might have sent more per open account but either way its IIB. Question is will this help our credit score by correcting these? and can the credit card companies try to collect on the debt since we initiated dispute? even though everything was IIB?? Thanks in advance

No, they cannot try to collect on the debts just because you dispute them. Disputing will help your credit scores. In some situations, you might be able to have the trade lines deleted completely which may or may not help your score. It is dependant on if that account was contributing to your "average age of account" metric. But you need to be prepared for them to just delete the trade line entirely upon dispute (this happened with a few of my IIB accounts).

Your most likely going to find that if you dispute with the credit bureaus that the tradelines will come back as "verified". If this happens you will need to be pushy and either redispute with the bureau or go directly to the original creditor.
