Storing wealth (as in future purchasing power) in gold and silver make sense. You do not have a counter party risk with physical gold or silver because you own the metal and it cannot be diluted/counterfeited like paper money can and always has been.

Investing your savings (risk-based gambling) is fine as well - but you are now bringing risk into the equation.

At day's end, I am willing to put my wealth into a real physical asset that someone cannot dilute via printing (and yes, digitally creating more is like printing.) I am willing to bet my approach will buy me all of the water I need, using your example, with ample gold and silver left over to spare.

By the way, when the world economy tanks, what are you going to trade your worthless pieces of paper for? Check out the history of Germany, Argentina and other nations that have seen their wealth evaporated when their currency went bust....the peeps with the gold and silver holdings turned out OK...the ones with paper lost it all.
You must own five Snuggies since you are a talking point machine from a midnight infomerical. Gold (just like paper money) has NO, let me repeat NO INTRINSIC VALUE! It is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it or trade for it. Right now people will trade for money or gold. In the event of a total meltdown, no one is going to want my paper money or your gold. It's a freaking gold color rock, it's worthless except what someone is willing to pay or trade for it. Of course, if the world economy tanked everyone will be clamoring for gold to make them some bling bling. Who needs food or water?

Question: What is the "intrinsic value" of a share of common stock in a company paying NO DIVIDENDS?

Answer: ZERO. Yes, that is the answer. Common stock that pays no dividends is simply a BET that SOMEONE ELSE is going to BE WILLING TO TRADE OR PAY for that piece of paper.

So, according to the above poster's logic, investing is stocks is also a useless place to put your "wealth" because it has no "intrinsic value" and you "cannot eat it."

Look, people come here for advice, right or wrong, and many are struggling with what to do next in their lives.

My advice to people reading this is to follow the facts, and not the sniping comments about infomercials.

                  Fact #1:

A person buying silver coins or bars two years ago would have seen his wealth climb by around 285% in 24 months.

                  Fact #2:

A person buying gold coins or bars two years ago would have seen his wealth climb by around 75% in 24 months.

                  Fact #3:

Since exactly ten year ago today, gold and silver are both up over 560%. The Dow Jones in the same time period has returned a measly 9.5%. Even worse, the NASDAQ is down 2.5% since Dec 3, 2000.

People can make laugh at the "little rocks" of gold and silver all that they want, but the ones who purchased these rare commodities 24 months ago are "laughing all the way to the bank."

As governments worldwide print their currencies away to nothing, gold and silver will continue to explode in value. To not understand this shows a lack of knowledge of Economics 101.

Best of luck to all who are trying to rebuild a nest egg during these tough financial times!

Well, I dunno what "knowledge" I was providing... most of the posts have been laughs. I was actually asking questions... which you didn't answer.
