    My name isn't on dh's cc's-

The only *debt* I have is the foreclosure. The deed had my name on it, not the loan.

The credit cards on the other hand, my husband had before I met him. They have my name by way of marriage and him telling them I could handle the account for him (make payments, etc)

They have never gotten my social or anything. They are showing up on my credit report.

Can I have them removed? Does that vary by state? I know each time they called once we were late in KY they would tell me that *I* have no obligation to pay the debt, that it was my husbands.

If he made you an authorized user, you're on the hook for the cards (on your credit report only) just the same as if they were in your name because you had authorization to use them, sign your name, had a card issued, etc. As far as the obligation to pay for them - I'm not sure, its something you'd have to research or ask your attorney.

He can ask that your name be removed from the card as an auth. user, however it will remain on your credit report, or at least it did for us when we had a credit card over 2 years ago; same situation as you.

This is incorrect, I've lived this nightmare.

My ex-husband was mad at me, made me a authorized user of his cards (without me even knowing) and then stopped paying the bill. It was on my credit report and I called each and every one of them. They were removed from my credit report because they had nothing from me authorizing to be responsible for his bill. Just because you are a authorized user, does not make you liable for that bill, and as such you do not have to have themshow on your credit report.

The way to get this removed from your credit report is to dispute it. It really is not hard to get it off your reports.

The difference is you didnt know - the OP knows she's on them, and maybe it varies state to state...i dont know. However what I do know is that with the one card we used to have, my husband was an authorized user, had a card issued in his name (at my request) and signed charges on that account. Therefore, he was responsible for those charges, and subsequently, the credit reporting would not / could not be removed (or at least this is what was told to us).

If there is proof that this person never used the card (never signed, etc) as in your case, then thats a different story; otherwise - it stays on your report and is up to Equifax/Experian/TU to remove (sometimes they will..sometimes they wont). We've battled it forever to have it taken off hubby's report and they refuse (Citi was the lender) to this day to remove it. However, it is correct that you are not liable for the actual account, but just the reporting of it on your credit report.

We paid our card off over 2 years ago when they decided to jack the rate for no reason from 7% to 18.99 - said screw that, paid it off and closed it. It still shows up on both of our reports as "closed at consumers request" and "paid as agreed" and we could not have it removed from hubby's - they (citi and Equifax, Experian) told us the above.

Did you have to show proof that you didn't know? Or tell them that you didn't know?

How do you prove you didnt know? Thats not possible. The CC caompany has to prove you did know.

I did not need to show proof that I didn't know I was added. Being as I was not co-owner of the account, and had never charged anything to the card...they could not just decide to make me liable for the account.

They didn't give me any problem at all, when I disputed they immediately removed them from my credit report.

Being a authorized user of a account, does not make you legally liable for the account. When you are not liable, they can not continue to report as you are.

Sounds like it could have been due to community property state rules, they are strange like that. I am not in a community property state.

It makes no sense that they could report the actual account on someones report that isn't legally liable.

Yeah, I dont know if its the state to state thing or not. Crazy. I did find some information yesterday searching though that might answer some questions. ;) Hope its okay to post this link, it has very important info in it.

This has all the lenders that issue cards listed as well and their rules to removing authorized users.

Now that I've read this... perhaps because ours was done back in 2008 - maybe the rules were different...I dont know, but it sounds like I couldnt remove hubby possibly because we closed the account and then paid it off as we refused to pay their new interest rate. ?? Hmmm.... Damn banks will do anything to get one over on ya

If you never activated the credit card then you could easily prove you never knew about it.
