He has no credit and just got a green card last year so they were asking questions like how much was the auto loan you got in 2002... and every time I said N/A it was coming back as unable to verify.

But the third time I did the app I said I would confirm later and I called them with him. And the phone verification actually worked this time. So, I'm excited and so is he. He has his first US credit card. 100 dollar limit... but hey, he has something in his name only. I had him added to my hooters card, but authorized user doesn't have the same impact on the credit report as something in your name.

Congrats! Too bad it was so much hassle, but great that it all worked out in the end! Give it a few months to start reporting with positive history, and he should be able to start getting some much better offers!

He might want to go to https://www.optoutprescreen.com and OPT IN (not out) to pre screened offers. Although he will end up with tons of junk mail, he will eventually start receiving pre approved credit offers. This way you'll have a pretty good idea when he can apply for a better card without a bunch of hard hits.

Hey Mike, are all people "opted in" by default or do you have to opt in to get offers?

I THINK that you are "opted in" by default... I however did not start receiving offers until I opted in, but I may have opted out at one point in time...

Regardless if you know you want the offers it wont hurt to "opt in" even if you already are.

Congrats on the new card! I got one just after my discharge BestBuy Rewards 500 limit, 39 AF, also a credit1 with 3300 limit and 75AF! So far except for the high AF for the Credit1, I like that card better as it is reporting to all three bureaus and started the next day after I activated the card, were as HSBS/BestBuy still doesn't show on any of my reports almost two months later. Also, use your Banks online bill pay as your payment will be posted to your HSBC/BestBuy account and your CL will also reflect the payment, unlike using BestBuy online payment it will post your payment but put a 10 day hold on your CL before your CL shows your payment! Credit1 has no holds even with their online payment Oh, well it's a start!

My best buy card has an annual fee as well. My limit is 500 as well. I think mine was more than 39 dollars though.

It all depends on what HSBC gives you... some have $0AF, others have $39 like myself. or $59, just like some have 18% (like me) or lower interest (not me) and others have over 22% interest. Just depend on the person reviewing your application and whatever HSBC uses for each of those perimeters.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but can this card only be used at Best Buy? Even though I use a debit card, many car rental places want a credit card at least on file.

They have two different cards one is a store card only usable at Best Buy the other is a MasterCard and could be used anywhere MasterCard is welcomed.

SWEET...I applied on Monday and got approved this morning for $300! I am pumped. Don't plan to use it much, but it will come in handy when I need to rent a car for business travel.

If you don't mind me asking what were the credit scores of those who received the $300 & $500 limits?

Just applied and was approved for $500. I currently have an account with Orchard Bank ($300) and Hooters ($300). 3 is the magic number, I'm done for a long time. I'll be happy to close the first (hooters or orchard) that charges a renewal annual fee.
