What happens if there is a fraud alert put on my file?
From what I can see, they are only checking my trans union report.
I have learned all kinds of not so nice things about credit bureaus over the years. Many years ago when I was in my early 20's I got a phone call from a collection agency about a student loan that was in default and they said they were going to start garnishing my paychecks... I'm like what student loan? I don't have any student loans in default... they didn't believe me and long story short I ended up having to get a lawyer to fight this ... they were saying I had taken a student loan when I was 16 years old under my married name... guess what, I didn't get married till I was 21... so, how did I take a student loan when I was 16 under a name I didn't have?
I found out from the credit bureau that they don't check stuff when they get a new record for your file. If the name looks about right they plop it on there without verifying anything. I had to add a note on my files that said "Please verify identity before putting anything on this report". Turned out it was a typo by the department of education when they sent it to the collection agency and they put the loan on my file instead of the other person it really belonged to.
