Anyone have a CC left open?

My husband and I filed back in October and should be discharged next week. I took a peek at my credit report and it showed my Macy's account as open with a credit limit of $100.

There was $0 balance on the card at the time of BK.

I had several other cards with a $0 balance that were closed (which is fine).

Have any of you had this happen? Of course, maybe the credit report does not reflect correctly, but is it possible for a card to be left open?

If it is, in fact, an open card, would it be a good idea to use it and pay it off each month to start reflecting good things on my credit report? Of course, the limit says it's only $100, but would it help?

I was not trying to get credit after my discharge, but out of the blue I got a new card from Macy's. I made a small purchase to be certain that the account had survived. I think they were sending new cards to all account holders, so the appearance of this card was a coincidence. My credit limit has steadily increased (I pay it in full whenever I use it). I did not owe macy's anything when I filed and had had the account for 10+ years.

it's quite possible your account has survived. If you have a card, after you get the discharge, you could always take it to the store and try to buy something small (and have enough cash with you just in case the account did not survive).

The only way to find out if the card survived is to visit your account online or call customer service to see if it is still open or, as the other poster stated, go to the store and see if it is still active. Note that there is no guarantee the card will or will not stay open so don't be surprised if even several weeks, months or years down the road, it gets closed out due to the bankrupty on your records. It happened to us with a Dress Barn card that made it through and was closed out for "BK on credit reports" over a year past a Chapter 13 discharge...Best of luck!

When we moved our bank account to the credit union pre-filing, they gave us a $5000 Visa. This has survived and we only use it for gas.

We filed 5 weeks ago and it looks like Kohl's & Victorias Secret has survived for us. My wife is really hoping Kohl's survives.

I am hoping my Kohl's stays open as well. I like getting the extra 30% off everything at least once a year. I do a lot of my Christmas shopping with it and buy things for the house when I get the extra off. I pay it off every month. I think I may have had an outstanding balance for three months one time when I bought a lot of things for the house, but other than that, I have always paid in full. I have my fingers crossed. lol!

I had 2 cards with zero balances and one was closed shortly after discharge. 5 weeks isn't enough time to know but hopefully you'll get to keep them.

My Macy's Visa and Macy's store accounts both survived my BK so far (discharged 7/2009). My accounts had zero balances when I filed and actually, the cards had never been activated. I activated them after discharged and have used them sparingly since. My CL, which was initially a few thousand dollars, was lowered to $500. However, since discharge, my CL has increased to $1,000. My Visa card expires in a few months so we'll see what happens then.

Kohls does offer good periodic discounts for Kohls' chargeholders. Could that be the reason why your wife is really hoping your Kohls' card survives? Hope it does, but don't hold your breath.

That's exactly the reason why she wants it to survive. It's the one card we paid off every month.

Our Kohl's made it through, as well as a DirecTV (Barclay) Visa...Kohls' limit has not changed, the visa went from a 10k limit down to 1k, which is just fine, I am happy to have it for extreme emergencies, even if we never use it, it makes me feel better knowing it's there. Also, having a 10k limit may be dangerous for me...

Both had zero balances but were activated at time of filing, we have been discharged for about 2 months and no change so far.

Good luck -the Kohl's coupons are great!

My RBS Platinum survived BK, with a 10K limit. And they renewed it for another 3 years back in November.

MY Firestone also survived with a 1800.00 limit.

All of the others were either included in the bk or were zero balances and closed by the creditor.
