Anyone have a hard time renting an apartment after BK?

I am looking into filing for Ch. 7 and have maintained great credit up until now. Unemployed and no luck on finding work and bills piling up where we can't pay anymore. We maintained them for a year without a job, but have reached the impossible now to cover our debt.

Anyhow, putting that aside, I am very worried about having "bankruptcy" on my credit that it will make it hard for us to obtain renting an apartment in CA. We have always been able to rent with good credit, but never filed bk before.

I am worried we won't get a place or they will jack up the price on us....anyone experience this?

    Thank you for your feedback.

Yes, you can still find decent places even with a bankruptcy on your file. You might have to shop around a bit but I reiterate that "you can" find a good place to rent. Good luck and let us know your results!

With all of the foreclosures in CA most, but not all apartments are looking pass the Bk due to the economy. Mainly they are looking at can you afford to pay the rent and have a job. f you keep the rent to less than 34% of your salary you shouldn't have a problem. A coworker just rented a nice apartment in a better part of town then where I currently live... so yes, you might have a few say no up front, but make that one of your questions when you call about the property. If it is a really nice place that you would like to live in and they are not to keen about your Bk, you might want to see if they will take a larger deposit. Then again you might just want to keep look for a better place and not live there! Best of luck and let us know how things go?

        Thank you All

        Thank you for the replies.

        It sounds much more positive.

I have been relying on a world of credit and have not lived without having it for so long.

I have forgotten they days of not having it.
It may be a bit difficult, but I think and hope we will be fine.

Thank you for the positive feedback.

In Michigan, I needed a co-signor in order to rent after my CH7. The rental policy at my apartment complex specifically addressed the issue of BK and would not lease until 36 months post discharge without a co-signor. And, for what it's worth, I should probably note that the apartment I'm renting is considered somewhat upscale as compared to other apartments in the area.
