Is it best do dispute items on my credit report to the credit bureaus online or by mail? Online it believe you can check the status pretty efficiently. Isnt this the best way?

No, it is better to have a papertrail of the dispute - send your dispute CMRRR.
If the CRA does not fix it, then you dispute with the creditor. If they do not fix it then you sue them for FCRA violation. But you need to keep your paper trail. I have found that I only had to dispute with the CRA's except for one collections acct which the CA deleted when the CRA didn't fix it!Filed CH 7 9/30/2008

I disputed all mine online and didn't have any issues. The only one that I was frustrated with was experian. I first disputed my mortgage being left on my report and they came back saying it would remain.
