Approved for non-secured card 2 weeks post discharge

I was discharged on 9/21/2009 and started receiving all of the letters (auto loans, cc's, etc) with really bad rates. Yesterday, though, my wife and I received an offer (each) from Orchard Bank. Mine said pre-approved (yeah, ok) for 9.9% variable with a $39 dollar annual fee and a 25 day grace period. (Hers was 19.99% with a $74 dollar annual fee, I was suprised at the huge difference, but I haven't pulled her report to do any clean-up yet).

I was going to get a secured card to start rebuilding my credit in a few months, but figured that this was a pretty decent offer considering I am less than 2 weeks post discharge. I figured, what the heck, might as well apply (figuring that I would be rejected anyway). So I applied and was approved!!! $500 dollar limit, should be getting the card soon!!!

I am planning on locking it at my parents house in their safe, I am going to change my auto-pays for cell phone and dish (that are currently coming out of my checking account) to go on the credit card and then setup an auto-pay to pay the credit card off every month. Essentially, I will be doing the same thing as now, but using a credit card to help rebuild.

Pretty excited, I've read about a lot of other people on the boards who have had problems getting new credit. Maybe I just got lucky, but there is hope out there for all.

Note: I did not discharge any debt from HSBC in my bk. I had always been on time with all payments up to 3-4 months before filing, so that might have helped the approval. Also, the bk shows up on all my credit reports and I only had one item to dispute on one report (a car we turned in that was being reported as a charge off instead of iib).

Good to hear! You may want to try Capital One, I looked into Orchard and could only get a secured card with an annual $79 fee, my husband was approved for the "platinum card" with a $39 fee (not secured). Don't know why the difference...
Anyway, I tried Capital One and got approved instantly for $500 (not secured), I am too going to use it to pay for a utility bill automatically so that I can start rebuilding my credit score.

i was discharged sept 4th, and just got approved right now for the orchard unsecured card with a credit limit of 500. It has the annual fee of 39.00. I decided to go for it to start rebuilding my credit. I will get a tank of gas on it each month and then pay the bill off as soon as i get it.

Haven't checked my FICO score since I've been discharged, but it was in the 400's about a month before I filed I was REALLY surprised I was approved for the Capital One card with my credit history (I stopped paying a year before I filed, so I have soooo many charge-offs and delinquencies on my cc history).

P.S. I have ZERO interest until sometime in 2010, after that it's like 19% and if I'm current on my bill, they will increase my credit limit then! I don't plan on carrying a balance, but maybe paying a monthly utility bill on it to rebuild my credit.

Orchard was the first card I got out of bk too (1 week post discharge).

At first when I applied online, it denied me and recommended a 'secure card', but Ive read that if you wait 5 minutes and apply again, you get approved for the unsecured card. And thats exactly what I did

Out of the 3 card I now have to rebuild my credit, I like my Orchard the best! Lowest fees, no BS, free online bill payment (vs. credit ones card that charges you $8 to pay your credit card bill online!! highway robbery!!) I mail a check to credit one, they get enough of my hard earned money in other fees!

Also somebody asked about credit scores - right after discharge my experian score was 417.

Right after getting the orchard card - it went to the low 500's. Every month since then its gone up exponentially, and now its at 650!!
So have faith in the Orchard card!! Also try credit one and Hooters. The Credit one has steep fees, but right now Im more focused on re-establishing my credit. The fee is a small road bump.

Reason for filing: Medical, NOT irresponsibility with credit.

I applied for the orchard card like 3 times... denied every time! lol. I see it was using experian to check my credit so I pulled my experian report. It still shows my 1st mortgage as being there and delinquent. And like one other loan. So, I put in some disputes with it. Maybe that's why they kept denying me.

I got the car loan now... so, I don't think I will try for any cards. Will just use the car loan to rebuild... I hope that's enough?

Do I have to have a credit card to rebuild or is the car loan enough?

From what I've read (depending on your goals), lenders like to see both revolving and installment credit on your report. So a credit card would be beneficial.

My husband and I were both approve for a Orchard cc with a limit of $750/ea just weeks after discharge. I think it's a great card for building credit. Like many of you, we have set our cellphone and Edison bill to autopay on these cards and pay them off each month. You have to start somewhere!

Amy.....I am trying to decide the same thing. I do NOT want a credit card but I am thinking that in order to rebuild I might need a revolving account. Until I get to the point financially where I have an emergency fund and can begin building wealth I feel like I need to keep my credit as good as I can given the circumstances.

Yea, I hear ya. I got lucky though I apparently got one of my credit cards back...I mentioned it in the other thread. The decided to reopen an account I had closed back in 2005. So, I think I'm done! I got a car loan and a credit card... so, I'm all set. I hope my score goes back up fairly quickly as its important for my job, my car insurance, my apartment complex. My complex even told me that if my score/credit isn't cleaned up by the time I renew my lease they may have to charge me additional security deposit... which I think is dumb but when I signed the lease I was not required to put any security deposit down, so I guess they want some kind of insurance in the event I try to stiff them... lol.
