    young adults just starting out....

hope it's ok to post this here, but couldnt figure out where else to post it

my daughter is 18 and would like to start building her credit so she can eventually buy a car.

what retail stores would be easy for her?

Here's an excellent article on how to establish first-time credit - http://www.bankrate.com/brm/news/debt/20021108a.asp Well worth reading! Alsosuggests which cc is best to start with along with other things that are important to do along the way.

Watch her use of credit carefully. Make sure the cc limit is low (like $500) so if she loses control, the damage can be contained. And there is no need to get more than one card to start with. Ensure she can handle it first, makes all the payments on time herself, etc - that's crucial to building good credit practices for a lifetime.
I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice nor a statement of the law - only a lawyer can provide those.

OMG 18 is way too young to start with cc! My debt started at 21 and has been building since. Now I am headed to bankruptcy court. I think it would be wise to teach her to save her money and that if she cant afford it she can't have it! We all think we can handle credit, and I don't think any 18 year old will really understand how dangerous credit can be.

Macy's is pretty easy to get and it will help build credit.

J.C. Penney gave my daughter a card with a $500 limit when she was 18. She still has it at age 21 and only uses it now and then and pays it off. I am certain they obtained her name from her college as the preapproval arrived after she started classes. She took the card and it has helped establish her credit but she is prudent with the card and it carries a zero balance.
