    Navy Federal Credit Union: Unreal!!!

Just received my NFCU information; applied for two of the credit cards (Master Rewards and Visa Rewards). Received confirmation that I was approved for both and both cards are coming. Don't know the APR, but I believe they are favorable. I check my online status to check out my credit limits....Mastercard was $9,000 and the Visa was $17,500!!! Talk about crazy!!! I haven't even been discharged 1 year (October will be the 1 year mark) and they gave me these stupid limits. My FICO's are decent (around 660-680) and my income is around 90K, but I still didn't think I would get approved, let alone get those high limits.

Needless to say, looks like my starter credit cards are going in the drawer to be used every 6 months (Hooters, Orchard, Best Buy Visa, Target). Chalk up NFCU as BK friendly, my friends. Lots of ways to join now, so see if you qualify. Nice assistance for boosting up the FICO's.

Wow! Wonder if you could be a member if you had 7 years in the USMC?

Anyone can be an NFCU Member

When I joined NFCU, you had to either be in the military, a Veteran, or be referred by a family member. It was exclusive. Now, everyone is allowed to join.

They are BK-friendly unless you are filing BK and they are a creditor. Absolute worst collections of all my creditors. Called daily until I had my case number eventhough I gave them my lawyers name and number. I gave them info when they called on a Friday, missed a call from them on Saturday and they called my siblings in different states on Sunday looking for me.

I wouldn't go so far as to say everyone is allowed to join.

You need to be Army/Marine/Navy/AF or Reservist Uniform or Retired, Army and Air National Guard civilian employee or retired, in an DoD Officer Candidate Program, DoD Civilian Employee, Government Contractor on a DoD Installation, or a family member of one of the above.

It's easier that one person can join and then pass membership through family to an extended family member that wouldn't otherwise be eligible (i.e. aunt's husband can be a member, aunt becomes member, your mother becomes member, you become member, etc.).

Many credit unions either don't allow family transfers, or limit it to parent/child.

Yep - NFCU totally came through for me shortly after my bk with a 5k cc. I had been a long time member. I'm a big fan. But I also didn't bk anything of theirs and I'm sure if I had, I would have been blacklisted by them.

I looked into them and would love to apply for a credit card through them...but I don't know anyone military that is a member. Otherwise, I'd be there in a second!

Well, they had commercial asking you to join. I don't see why they would spend millions on a commercial that wasn't targeting the general public.

Do you have to have a checking/savings account in order to apply for their credit cards?

You need to be a member to apply for lending products.

The minimum to be a member is establishing a Share Savings account with $5.

I opened up my NFCU accounts the other day. As soon as I'm discharged I am going get a shared CD loan and use the proceeds for a secured mastercard. So I will get two positive tradelines immediately by only putting up collateral for one account.

I don't want to get any more CC, but I will need the positive tradelines to increase my score so I can get a mortgage again in the future.

Because of this thread and the fact that I have a 700 card with Orchard that a pay a monthly fee for I tried to get a NFCU Visa. Came back with a 12K line. I was floored. Way more than I need and surprised they would give it to me as I did not even include my wife or her income. I shall be closing the Orchard card.

We opened a OC Teacher's Credit Union Account just before we filed to move out of BOFA. They gave us a 5K credit line that we have not touched. I hope that they allow us to keep it. So far so good.
