If you don't have a slew of late payments and charge-offs on your credit report already, when you file BK, then there is less over all damage to your credit report. By the same token, I would not fight and struggle to go into a BK with "good" credit. If you happen to have good credit going into Bk, great, if not, so what...you still need to file BK.
But in the grand scheme of things, BK is a financial decision, and the LAST thing you should be thinking about when considering BK is your credit worthiness.
It seems, from my experience... that if you file Ch. 7, credit is easier to get after you're discharged, rather than those who file Ch. 13. I see alot of posters who have several new credit cards and rather high limits, and new cars. My scores are slowly climbing, but I have be declined for most things. I am a homeowner and have paid on time since my discharge 1-1/2 years ago.
I asked this same question over and over again and one day somebody sent me some information on a guy named Stephen Snyder who wrote a book called "Life After Bankruptcy". I signed up for his seminar in May of 08 and can not wait to get there cause he swears that he filed in 95 and due to his experiences, he felt called to help those of us who are going through this and because of his mistakes he felt he was knowledgable about what to do after Bk.
