hello, I am new here and am so glad I found a place to talk about this. I need some advice from anyone willing to offer it. My husband and I filed bankruptcy less than a year ago and are paying monthly through my paycheck (humiliating). Before bankruptcy we had perfect credit, and lived very comfy. My hubby lost his job and since we lived basically paycheck to paycheck we got in major debt paying bills with credit cards. Now, after filing, I am finding it so hard to do ANYTHING in life. Not to mention the major embarrassment and humiliation that comes with people finding out. Its like you told them you have the plague. One of my coworkers found out because I was asked to rent a car to travel for work and I couldn't because I do not have any credit cards now. She hasn't talked to me since. Now I have a leased car that is due in a few months and I need to buy it (cause we have no money for new car) and have been told by many people that I will not be able to. And I have to rent a new apartment soon cause we can no longer afford our townhome. So I am left feeling so depressed and hopeless that it is unbearable. We have a child and are worried
we will be living on the street. If anyone can offer advice on what to do about getting out of my lease and buying it, and/or renting a new place I'd be so grateful. Thanks for listening
There are a lot of people who rent homes/apts who will overlook the BK and rent to you, just be prepared to talk to a lot of people, and don't pay application fees to anyone unless you have a good sense from them that they would rent to you if everything checks out (except credit scores).
I wish I could help you on the car - chances are the buyout on the lease is more than the car is worth? I've read on this forum that Cap One does car loans for people who've filed BK, but I'm guessing the interest rates are nasty. If you can buy a cheap cheap cheap car for cash and then save money monthly (that would've been a payment), you might be able to save enough in a year to upgrade your car. For example, buy a $1000 beater now to get you through, then save $400/mo for 10 mos = $4,000 - sell beater, buy 4-5k car.
Best wishes to you - and I highly recommend finding someone to talk to about your feelings of alienation and hopelessness. You are not your financial difficulties, your credit scores, or any other negatives that some would try to make you. Those things can't define who we are. I'm sure that you have many wonderful qualities, abilities, etc - focus on those, and take care of yourself!
